The principle of a DC withstand voltage tester is to apply a high-voltage DC current to the insulation of electrical equipment and accurately monitor its leakage current to determine the insulation performance.
During testing, the instrument outputs an adjustable DC high voltage (usually negative) applied to the test object. Under DC voltage, the capacitive charging current rapidly decays to zero, and in the final steady state, the current flowing through the insulation is only a leakage current in the microampere range. This current consists of both conduction current (reflecting the overall conductivity of the insulation) and absorption current (reflecting dielectric polarization and local defects).
By analyzing the absolute value of the leakage current, its trend with the applied voltage time, and the phase imbalance coefficients, it is possible to effectively diagnose whether the insulation is damp, aged, or has concentrated defects (such as air gaps or cracks). Compared with AC testing, DC testing equipment is lighter and causes less damage to the insulation, making it particularly suitable for on-site insulation testing of capacitive equipment such as cables, generators, and high-voltage capacitors.
