The core principle of an SF6 gas leak detector is to detect and locate minute leaks of SF6 gas in the environment using a high-sensitivity sensor. This is based on negative corona discharge or infrared absorption technology.
The most common principle is negative corona discharge: The instrument's probe contains high-voltage electrodes that create a high electric field at the tip, ionizing air molecules and generating a stable "corona discharge" that forms a small discharge current. When the probe draws in air containing SF6 gas, the SF6 molecules, with their strong electronegativity, "capture" free electrons, significantly suppressing the intensity of the corona discharge and reducing the discharge current. The higher the concentration of leaked SF6 gas, the more significant the current drop. The instrument detects and amplifies this current change through precision circuitry, converting it into an audible (beep frequency change) and visual (concentration value display) leak signal, thus achieving highly sensitive, qualitative, and semi-quantitative leak location.
