The core principle of an SF6 purity tester is to calculate the volume percentage concentration of SF6 by detecting the physical properties of a gas mixture (mainly thermal conductivity or sound velocity) and comparing it with pure SF6 gas.
It is primarily based on two technologies:
1. Thermal Conductivity Detection Method: Different gases have different thermal conductivities. The instrument has a built-in thermal conductivity sensor. When the gas being tested flows through it, it changes the sensor's heat dissipation rate, causing a change in the electrical signal. By comparing the difference in thermal conductivity between the tested gas and a pure SF6 reference gas, the purity of SF6 in the gas can be calculated. This method is effective for detecting the mixing of SF6 with air (nitrogen, oxygen).
2. Sound Velocity Detection Method: The speed of sound propagation in a gas depends on the gas's molecular weight and temperature. The molecular weight of SF6 is much larger than that of the main components of air (N₂, O₂). The instrument obtains the sound velocity by accurately measuring the propagation time of sound waves in a fixed gas chamber and compares it with a known sound velocity-purity relationship curve for SF6-air mixtures, thereby directly and quickly calculating and displaying the purity value. This method has strong anti-interference capabilities and is the mainstream method for on-site testing.
